Tejas Mk-1A’s Maiden Flight: HAL Ushers in a New Era of Indigenous Air Dominance
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) etched a pivotal chapter in India’s aerospace journey on October 17, 2025, as the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk-1A executed its inaugural flight from the Nashik facility. This 45-minute milestone, witnessed by over 800 HAL personnel, validated the upgraded platform’s AESA radar, advanced electronic warfare systems, and streamlined maintainability, fortifying the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) path to self-reliance.
The Tejas Mk-1A, evolving from the Mk-1’s proven design, integrates the indigenous Uttam AESA radar for superior multi-target tracking and beyond-visual-range engagements. It arrives amid the IAF’s bittersweet farewell to its MiG-21 squadrons in September 2025—a fleet marred by crashes and obsolescence that once symbolized Cold War-era dependencies. With squadron numbers hovering at a precarious 29 against a sanctioned 42, the Tejas infusion is non-negotiable for countering aerial threats from the PLAAF along the LAC and PAF incursions.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the event as a “beacon of Atmanirbhar Bharat,” coinciding with the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC)’s upcoming November 23, 2025, meeting to greenlight additional Tejas orders alongside ₹33,000 crore for four Landing Platform Docks (LPDs). Engine supply from GE Aerospace, ramping to four F404-IN20 units monthly by 2026, promises the first full squadron by 2028. Beyond domestic bolstering, the Tejas eyes export markets in Southeast Asia, potentially adding ₹10,000 crore to India’s FY26 defense exports.
As the IAF pivots toward fifth-generation paradigms with the AMCA, this flight reaffirms HAL’s prowess, ensuring India’s skies remain sovereign and secure.
