The Indian Navy is poised to strengthen its maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities with the acquisition of six additional Boeing P-8I Poseidon aircraft in a deal valued at around $4 billion. Why the P-8I Matters for India?
The P-8I is a customized variant of Boeing’s P-8 Poseidon specifically tailored for Indian requirements.
It serves as the cornerstone of India’s maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare efforts, covering vast swathes of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
India currently operates 12 P-8I aircraft, procured in two batches since 2009; these aircraft are deployed extensively to monitor strategic chokepoints and maritime activity.

The new contract will add six aircraft, enhancing fleet size and operational tempo amid increasing undersea threats from regional adversaries, including China and Pakistan.
