India Accelerates Defence Procurement: From Years to Weeks

In a major boost to defence modernization, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has significantly cut down the procurement cycle from an average of 96 weeks to just 24 weeks. This landmark reform, initiated under the ongoing “Year of Reforms” program, is aimed at improving the speed and efficiency of acquiring defence equipment—especially from indigenous sources.

The new measures simplify layered approvals and streamline financial vetting, enabling faster decision-making and better resource allocation. This initiative is expected to benefit Indian private manufacturers and MSMEs working under the “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” programs.

According to defence officials, this move will drastically reduce delays in urgent equipment procurement and help maintain readiness, particularly in border-sensitive regions. The MoD is also working on digitizing parts of the procurement process.

This reform aligns well with India’s recent push toward indigenous platforms like the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, Akash missile systems, and advanced AI-driven warfare solutions.
