Indian Army Seeks Six AK630 Guns for Drone Defense Along Pakistan Border

The Indian Army has issued a tender for six AK630 close-in weapon systems (CIWS) to bolster drone and missile defenses along the Pakistan border, as per a procurement notice dated October 16, 2025. These Russian-origin 30-mm rotary cannons will integrate with the Akashteer command system for rapid response.

Each AK630 unit fires 5,000 rounds per minute, effective against UAVs, low-flying threats, and incoming projectiles up to 4 km. Post-Operation Sindoor insights revealed vulnerabilities to Pakistani drone incursions, prompting this urgent acquisition valued at ₹200 crore.

The systems will be mobile, mounted on vehicles for deployment in Punjab and Rajasthan sectors. Indigenous upgrades by Ordnance Factory Board include electro-optical sensors and radar linkage for autonomous operation. Deliveries are slated for 2026, enhancing integrated air defense with existing assets like Igla missiles.

This step reflects India’s multi-layered border security strategy amid rising cross-border drone smuggling and attacks. Experts say it deters hybrid warfare tactics employed by adversaries.
